Despite the fact that D2R Items Blizzard is concerned that D2R Ladder's Diablo games aren't as profitable than other subscription models like World of Warcraft, it appears that the company has decided to pour a lot of effort and time towards the planned Diablo game this is certainly an indication of good things to come. 

However, the more time and effort dedicated to D2R Ladder potentially pushes back an upcoming sequel should Blizzard does its best to get D2R Ladder into the best shape it can be and keeps providing top-quality post-launch content, this is an appropriate compromise.

The players are hoping for a truly substantive offering of story-driven DLC along with cosmetic items as well as other game enhancements that usually arrive after a title releases. Sometimes content that was originally created for the base game could be diverted into DLC.

Making seem like there's more to come once the release of a game, but hopefully that isn't the case with D2R Ladder. Fergusson's comments suggest that there might be some massive story-driven stories for players to look forward to far ahead, and not just a sidelined base game content.

Blizzard's Diablo games have been around since 1997. It's no surprise that they have covered an extensive amount of story.
