In November of 2016, Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg stated that the sequel was being developed to "both delight our extremely active players with WoTLK Classic Gold, but also to expand the appeal more, bringing in new players and returning old fans."

World of Warcraft, or whatever it is known, is believed to be being developed for consoles and PC. Bungie is currently working with the co-designers High Moon Studios and Vicarious Visions.

The year before, Hirshberg announced that Bungie came up with a method to provide additional World of Warcraft content, quicker. The addition of two Studios could provide the answer he mentioned.

According to sources who spoke to Kotaku, Activision gets a "hefty chunk" of Bungie studio stock in the event that World of Warcraft does not be released this year. "Bungie employees' vesting schedules are in turn based on games released that include World of Warcraft, which offers them significant incentives to bring the sequel released this calendar year." Kotaku reported.

Activision has also confirmed that they have confirmed that a World of Warcraft game is due out in the coming year. We don't have any information on the game but Activision has stated that it will "take World of Warcraft back to its origins."

The latest World of Warcraft games have been set in the future, but the previous games were set inside World of Warcraft. The "back to its origins" reference could signal the return of that time period, however this isn't proven.

The buy WoTLK Classic Gold series is being developed over a three-year development cycle. In light of the fact that the 2016 game Infinite Warfare was made by Infinity Ward and 2015's Black Ops III was made by Treyarch which would mean that 2017's game will be directly from Sledgehammer Games. On an earnings conference, Activision confirmed this and Sledgehammer own posted a tweet about the announcement.
