The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for more accessibility options for the differently abled community. Physical distancing norms and lockdowns made the mobility of wheelchair users and others extremely difficult. To address this issue, a startup has developed an innovative telescopic ramp that can help improve accessibility.

What is a telescopic ramp?
A Telescopic Ramp is a portable ramp for wheelchair users that can extend and retract based on the required length. It consists of multiple interconnecting aluminum sections that slide in and out telescopically to adjust the length. When fully retracted, it can pack into a compact package for easy storage and transportation. When extended, it provides a long and gentle slope to smoothly roll wheelchairs, walkers or other mobility aids.

Key features and benefits
- Adjustable length: The ramp can extend up to 6 meters in length to accommodate different step heights and entry/exit points. This offers flexibility and universal accessibility.
- Compact size: When folded, it measures just 60x30x30 cm making it very portable. This allows easy carrying and installation anywhere needed.
- Lightweight: Being made of aircraft grade aluminum, the total weight is just 15 kg. This enables single person handling and installation.
- Foldable sections: The ramp consists of multiple interconnecting rectangular sections that fold effortlessly for compact packing.
- Slip-resistant surface: The anodized aluminum ramp surface has diagonal ridges to prevent slips and ensure safe transportation of wheelchairs or walkers.
- Handrails included: Safety handrails run along both sides for additional support and safety during mobility.
- Load capacity: The ramp structure is designed to support a safety load of 150 kg.

Usage in different settings

Accessing public transport
Buses and trains:
The telescopic ramp can be carried and installed at bus/train entrance within seconds to help wheelchair users and senior citizens easily board and disembark public transport with dignity and independence. This improves inclusiveness.

Metro stations:
At metro stations which have high platform-train gaps or multiple steps, the ramp helps bridge this accessibility gap. Being portable, it does not require permanent infrastructure changes but only few minutes for installation.
