Kate Winslet's character in the movie The Reader is based on a real-life war criminal. The woman she plays, Hanna Schmitz, was inspired by Ilse Koch, a notorious Nazi concentration camp guard.  Ilse Koch was known as the "Bitch of Buchenwald."
